Role Description Shelter Advocate
Summary
The responsibilities of all Shelter Staff are to provide reliable, uninterrupted on-site 24/7 coverage of our emergency shelter. Shelter Staff work as a team to provide advocacy to shelter guests of all ages. Shelter Staff provide crisis intervention, practical support, emotional support, and education; engage in recreational activities; maintain shelter security; model healthy relationships and non-violent conflict resolution to peers, volunteers, and shelter guests; and uphold agency policies and procedures.
Availability
Hiring for weeknight, weekend and overnight shifts.
Compensation
$16-$18 per hour
$18-$20 per hour for overnight and weekend shifts

Previous experience which would be helpful is experience working in social services, providing trauma informed care, customer service, volunteer management, staff supervision, managing and motivating others, teaching or training,
Responsibilities/Functions
Welcome new guests, complete intake paperwork accurately and timely, create and maintain proper guest files accurately and timely and orient new guests to the shelter.
Maintain a safe, supportive and trauma informed environment in the shelter.
Monitor the shelter to ensure the safety of clients and volunteers.
Work to support client needs based upon the plans and goals established by the Family Promise case managers.
Monitor and maintain shelter facilities; identify and resolve health and safety hazards; prepare beds/rooms for new guests; stock food and supplies daily.
Attending staff meetings and participating in regular ongoing training when scheduled by the Shelter Lead, Program Manager and Executive Director.
Work with volunteers to make sure meals are prepared and served on-time or if there are not volunteers work with families to prepare for breakfast and lunch.
Offer volunteers a brief orientation/direction for their shift.
Contact each family and monitor their physical and emotional well-being
Monitor laundry schedule
Check computers in and out as needed
Assist family with supplies they may need
Perform general administrative functions such as completing daily and guest logs, answering the phone, and responding to in-person inquiries professionally.
Provide consistent coverage for assigned shifts, working within the shelter team and independently completing all shift tasks.
Work Environment
This opportunity will take place in a shelter for families and single men and women experiencing homelessness. This shelter is run in collaboration with Hebron Housing Services. It involves regular interaction with volunteers and clients. Distractions and interruptions will be a regular occurrence.
Physical Demands
The Shelter Supervisor is required to talk and hear. Frequent standing; walking; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Should be able to lift and move up to 25 lbs.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This position is offered full-time or part-time and has first, second, and third-shift availability. Hours and shifts will vary depending on availability and shelter needs. Some weekends and evenings are required. This position is seasonal with the potential for an extension.
