Joe Nettesheim spoke at Evangelical and Reformed United Church of Christ O on September 17. Their community provided a gift of $400. Maria, Joe and Jacob met with Nan from Lasagna Love to discuss ways they can support families experiencing homelessness. Our staff enjoyed a Brewer's game to celebrate our accomplishments in a suite provided by Hunzinger Construction.
When deciding to support a nonprofit organization what is the item that most impacts your decision?
1. FAMILY PROMISE TO MANAGE EMERGENCY OVERFLOW SHELTER
Family Promise and Hebron Housing Services to collaborate on this project
We are excited to share with you that Family Promise of Waukesha County and Hebron Housing Services have been selected by the Housing Action Coalition of Waukesha County to manage the Winter Emergency Overflow Shelter for Waukesha County. This is a collaborative effort with shared responsibilities. The collaboration between our two agencies is positive for all those experiencing homelessness in Waukesha County and strengthens the services provided to those who are financially vulnerable.
This is a significant step forward for Family Promise of Waukesha County as we continue to expand our ability to serve families experiencing homelessness. While this is a joint effort to maximize the strengths of both organizations, Family Promise will provide case management to families with minor children while Hebron Housing Services will focus on single adults.
More details will be provided soon.
2. FAMILY PROMISE STAFF APPRECIATION
Hunzinger Construction provided suite at American Family Field for our team
It was Family Promise staff appreciation day! This past Wednesday we celebrated our team and all they have accomplished over the past year. Thanks to Hunzinger Construction who generously shared their suite at American Family Field, we were able to enjoy the Brewer game in style.
Great evening, great conversation, great game, and a wonderful team of dedicated people serving families experiencing homelessness!
3. THE MEASURE OF A NONPROFIT
How do you decide if a nonprofit organization is worthy of your support?
“The next time you are looking at a charity do not ask about the rate of their overhead. Ask about the scale of their dreams.”
-Dan Pallotta
Uncharitable is a documentary that examines the effectiveness of the nonprofit world and how our attitudes toward non-profits have suffocated their effectiveness. “What if everything we've been taught about charitable giving is wrong? What if it's undermining the very causes we love the most? UnCharitable is a one-of-a-kind movie that shows how our charitable traditions and prejudices have suffocated the charitable sector and prevented it from leading the charge to truly change the world.”
At Family Promise of Waukesha County we wrestle with this idea everyday. How can we become more effective in serving families experiencing homelessness? How do we reach our aspirational goals of empowering people to be lifted out of poverty and homelessness-permanently. How can we truly be a life transforming agency in the midst of a complicated problem?
You are invited to a screening of UnCharitable on October 11 to consider how we think about the work and place of nonprofit organizations.

4. HISPANIC AND LATINO HERITAGE MONTH
Hispanic Heritage month celebrated from Sept 15-October 15
Celebrate Hispanic and Latino Hispanic Heritage from September 15 - October 15! This is a great opportunity to learn more about Hispanic culture. The 2020 census showed that about 19% of the United States population is Hispanic. This PBS website provides articles about Hispanic culture and videos about inspiring people that we can use to learn more about Hispanic Culture.
This is important to Family Promise of Waukesha County because 35% of families we serve to prevent family homelessness and 5% of families we have served in our shelter programs identify as Hispanic.
5. PROJECT HOMELESS CONNECT
United Way sponsoring event at Carroll University
Volunteers are needed to support ProjectHomelessConnect (PHC), a community event in October that brings vital resources together under one roof on one day to best serve those at risk of homelessness in Waukesha County. PHC services typically include health screenings, dental and vision exams, haircuts, resource fair, and take-away hygiene & cold weather items.
Families in our shelter and prevention programs will be invited to participate in the event. It would be great to have volunteers from Family Promise supporting this day as well.
