FRIDAY FIVE : COMMUNITY SHELTER FOOD DRIVE

Updated: Apr 5, 2023

This blog provides the top 5 highlights or updates about Family Promise of Waukesha County for Friday, March 31, 2023.

The Friday Five is a weekly blog post/update that focuses on the top five occurrences, issues, opportunities facing Family Promise each week. It is our hope that it will help you stay informed and connected to the mission of Family Promise of Waukesha County.

Our mission is to help low-income families and families experiencing homelessness achieve sustainable independence

through a community-based response.

The stories you can read this week are:

This weeks photos are from a donation we received from (1)St. Leonard, Muskego as part of their Lenten collection. (2) We received the Treasurers of the Church Award from Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. (3) Jessi from the Women's Center of Waukesha facilitated a workshop on Trauma Informed Care. This was one of the trainings for Lead Volunteers as we prepare for the Community Shelter.

Thank you!

3. DIALOGUE OF HOPE

Join us on April 18 as we prepare to open our new Community Shelter Program for a special conversation with Michelle Miller. She will share her story and the transformative impact that Family Promise had on her life. Attendees can participate in a Q + A. Registration is necessary.

Questions please contact Joe Nettesheim: joe@familypromisewaukeshawi.org

4. TESTIMONY FOR GIVING DAY APRIL 20

The most effective way for people to learn about Family Promise of Waukesha County is through the testimony of someone they trust. You are invited to share your story about Family Promise and why our mission to help families experiencing homelessness is important on Giving Day April 20. The purpose would be to engage new donors, volunteers and spread the word about the impact of Family Promise.

We would use your testimony- written on in video form to create a webpage for you to share with friends, family and work colleagues letting them know about Giving Day. Here is an example that Joe and Maribeth Nettesheim made.

Contact Joe Nettesheim if you would like to be an ambassador for Family Promise on Giving Day! joe@familypromisewaukeshawi.org

Funds from Family Promise Giving Day will support our Apartment and Community shelter programs. The theme is A Bed to Sleep In. When asked what was her best day at Family Promise of Waukesha County, Ann responded that it was her first day because she was able to see "my kids sleeping in a bed."

No family, no child should ever have to sleep in a car or a tent.

They all need a bed to sleep in.

5. POVERTY, BY AMERICA

Matthew Desmond, the author of Evicted, has released a new book titled: Poverty, by America. In this book Desmond tackles the question why the United States, the richest country on earth, has more poverty than any other advanced democracy. Why does this land of plenty allow one in every eight of its children to go without basic necessities, permit scores of its citizens to live and die on the streets, and authorize its corporations to pay poverty wages?

Matthew Desmond is on a book tour discussing his book. The closest he gets to Waukesha is Chicago on April 12. See information on the graphic below.
